Trails of Movement 5

Description

Kudos to my dear friend Shannon for coming all the way down from Edmonton to do a shoot with me and being a great model. I've been wanting to recreate a shoot idea that I saw some time back (probably even last year) and I loved the feeling it gave off. So in the attempt of learning I dragged a 3/4 full 10lbs bag of Whole Wheat Flour to the seamless studio in my school and just dumped it basically.

I was originally going to do just plain flour but we had basically none at my house but the whole wheat turned out to add some interesting texture to the whole shot with the little brown chunks it had in it.

The idea behind the shoot was to get the motion of the body captured by the movement of the flour left behind in the air.

There was a few kinks that came with this shoot, like the entire seamless studio and tabletop studio having been covered by a very very thin layer of flour, it even got into the hallways and people were coughing from it. Also the fact that trying to focus on such a low aperture was a total bitch to get perfect and annoyed the heck out of me. An I couldn't increase the focal plan without totally killing the freeze frame effect of the flour in the air and attempt to keep it sharp. I even had to crank up the ISO to 400 to get at least a shutter speed of 1/850+.

We had to start taking 5 minute breaks every 10 minutes to let the flour dust settle on everything in the room, which was really time consuming. But a good time to catch up and think of new movements.

I was hoping to get the new Canon 7D that morning so I could take full advantage of the 8 fps because I really noticed my XSi needing to take it's time after doing a burst of 9 to be able to take a full burst again, and I would of taken the chance to finally send in my 50mm f1.4 for repairs since the 1 year warranty expires really soon.

Overall I'm really pleased with the results of this shoot and am looking forward to playing around more with the idea of movement being captured in freeze frame while still seeing 'trails of movement'.
